Coalfire Labs R&D Team Releases First Tool: Jailbreak for iOS to Enable Security Professionals to Test for New Vulnerabilities

Westminster, CO – February 1, 2018 –Coalfire, a trusted provider of cybersecurity advisory services, today announced the launch of the Coalfire Labs Research and Development Team, a group designed to advance the state of the cybersecurity industry through the development of tools, techniques and practices.

While the Coalfire Labs team serves the broader mission of providing industry-leading penetration testing and technical assessment services to organizations, their newly formed Labs Research and Development Team is focused on sharing research and open-source tools with the security community to advance the state of cybersecurity tradecraft, as well as developing proprietary technology that drives industry-leading efficiency, accuracy and technical excellence in Coalfire Labs services offerings. The group will release white papers, research reports, webinars and blogs to the security community as well as offer technical training for IT professionals to continuously support the pressing need for a broader base of security talent.

As its first public release, the R&D team published an open source Jailbreak for iOS 11.1.2 (15B202), written by Coalfire Labs Security Consultant Bryce Bearchell. This initial tool from the R&D team enables running unsigned code on iPhones, provides a remote shell, full filesystem access, and live kernel memory introspection. These capabilities allow security professionals to research and test iOS 11.1.2 for security vulnerabilities, providing advanced insight into the latest iOS hardware and applications.
