Augment Code Becomes First AI Coding Assistant to Achieve ISO/IEC 42001 Certification from Coalfire Certification

Palo Alto, CA – Augment Code, the leading AI coding assistant built for software engineers working on large and complex codebases, has received ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification—becoming the first organization to receive this certification from Coalfire Certification following its accreditation to perform ISO/IEC 42001 audits.
ISO/IEC 42001 is the first international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS), enabling organizations to establish, implement, maintain, and continuously improve a management system tailored to the governance of AI technologies. Certification provides independent verification that an organization’s AI practices meet rigorous requirements for responsibility, transparency, and risk management.
“Building trust in artificial intelligence starts with accountability,” said Jon McLachlan, CSO at Augment Code. “This certification validates our dedication to embedding responsible governance into every stage of our AI system lifecycle.”
Prior to certification, Augment Code elected to undergo a readiness assessment with Coalfire Certification that simulated a formal ISO/IEC 42001 audit. This initial review helped clarify the structure and expectations of the certification process, including clause intent and evidence types. While Coalfire Certification does not provide advisory services, the assessment offered Augment valuable visibility into the standard’s requirements and audit methodology.
The formal certification audit was conducted in two stages. In Stage 1, Coalfire Certification evaluated Augment’s documented policies, procedures, and other required materials to confirm that an auditable management system was in place. Stage 2 included an in-depth assessment of Augment’s operational AI practices, including risk management, system impact assessments, development workflows, data management, and oversight of third-party AI components.
“I am thrilled to announce that Augment Code, a leader in AI software development solutions, is the very first organization to earn ISO/IEC 42001 certification from Coalfire following our accreditation,” said Adam Shnider, Coalfire’s EVP of Assessment Services. “This historic accomplishment not only reflects their relentless commitment to responsible AI governance, but also demonstrates how their innovative technologies are shaping a safer, smarter digital future.” Coalfire Certification was among the first certification bodies accredited to perform ISO/IEC 42001 audits. As an accredited certification body, Coalfire Certification operates in accordance with ISO and international accreditation guidelines, bringing integrity and independence to the audit and certification process.
